Ah, South by Southwest, always saving the best for last. In this case, the very last SXSW Film award, the audience prize for the music-film-focused 24 Beats per Second category, handed out Monday to Take Me to the River, which brings together a few generations of Delta bluesman, soul shouters, and hip hop stars to celebrate the musical legacy of Memphis via the recording of a new compilation album (with a little history of the interracial soul scene centered around iconic labels Stax and Hi thrown in). With a cast including William Bell, Snoop Dog, Mavis Staples, Otis Clay, Lil P-Nut, Charlie Musselwhite, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Yo Gotti, Bobby Rush, Frayser Boy, and the North Mississippi All-Stars, little wonder it’s a crowd-pleaser. Next stop for director Martin Shores’ doc is the Nashville Film Festival in April.
